TBSI is jointly founded in 2014 by the Tsinghua University and the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley). Its establishment received the full support of Shenzhen Municipal Government and was based on the initiative of creating a bridge across countries and cultures, disciplines, industry and academia as well as an unprecedented platform for global collaboration, nurturing future leaders and entrepreneurs in science and technology.

This year, overseas students (non-Chinese citizens) are offered with the opportunity to apply for the PhD and Master’s scholarships at Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI). This award program is available to pursue any study subject offered by TBSI.

The scholarships are worth the following value:

  • Tuition cost for doctoral program: 40,000 CNY/annum
  • Tuition cost for master’s program: 33,000 CNY/annum
  • Medical insurance: 600 CNY/annum
  • Application cost: 800 CNY
  • Accommodation on campus: approx. 1,000 CNY/month for single rooms. (Kindly note that all students are required to pay a two month deposit plus six-month pay-ahead rental expense when checking in their dormitory. The rent should be paid every six months thereafter.

Suitability Criteria:

  • Must be non-Chinese citizens and healthy
  • Must apply as a full time overseas postgraduate student at Tsinghua University in 2018 and be admitted to the college for admission (excluding the joint training program)
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree and be younger than 35 years old (for applicants studying a master program in China) or, hold a master’s degree and be younger than 40 years old (for candidates who come to China to attend a PhD program)
  • Have no other sources such as Chinese embassies and consulates overseas to apply for Chinese government grants
  • Must not be the recipient of other types of scholarships awarded to study at this University
  • Candidates for Chinese Government Scholarships through this University must meet the following requirements:
  • Non-Chinese citizens
  • Have applied for graduate programs as a full time international student in 2018 at Tsinghua University (excluding joint graduate degree programs)
  • Must have been pre-admitted by the target school/department of Tsinghua University
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree and be younger than 35 years old (for applicants studying a master program in China) or, hold a master’s degree and be younger than 40 years old (for candidates who come to China to attend a PhD program)
  • Have yet to apply for CGS through other channels

Application Submission

To apply for the PhD and Master’s scholarships at Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI), please visit the Online Application System and create an account to complete an application form. Then, upload the mandatory supporting documents and pay the application fee online at the time of submission.

Closing dates:

First round: December 15, 2018 at 08:00 AM (Beijing Time)

Second round: January 1, 2019 at 08:00 – March 1, 2019 at 17:00 PM (Beijing Time)

Last round: March 15, 2019 at 8:00 AM – May 1, 2019 at 17:00 PM (Beijing Time)
